What does "Continuing the Legacy" really mean?
Between 1979-1980, a visionary couple, Mike and Maureen Tuccelli, ignited a flame of unity, empowerment, and camaraderie within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. With unwavering dedication, they birthed the Silent Weekend conference, a beacon of silent immersion, education, and cultural celebration. For nearly four decades, from its inception until 2019, Silent Weekend stood as a testament to their passion for fostering growth, connection, and advocacy.
Through countless workshops, discussions, and shared experiences, Silent Weekend became more than just an event—it was a sanctuary where individuals found empowerment in their identities, honed their American Sign Language skills, and forged lifelong bonds.
Mike and Maureen’s unwavering commitment ensured that every attendee felt seen, heard, and valued.
Yet, amidst the triumphs and milestones, life dealt its inevitable challenges. The Covid-19 pandemic and Maureen’s courageous battle with cancer brought a temporary pause to the cherished tradition. However, in the face of adversity, the spirit of resilience prevails.
In 2024, with hearts brimming with determination and gratitude, we honor Mike and Maureen’s enduring legacy by resurrecting their noble endeavor under a new name but same passion — The Hands Up Conference. With the 2024 theme “Continuing the Legacy,” we embark on a journey to honor the past while embracing the future.
Underneath this new banner, we pledge to uphold the values of inclusivity, education, and community that Mike and Maureen so passionately championed. The Hands Up Conference stands not only as a tribute to their memory but as a testament to the permanent impact they left upon our hearts and minds.
As we gather once more in the spirit of learning, connection, and mutual respect, we carry forward the torch that they so faithfully tended. Together, we strive to create a space where individuals of all backgrounds can find solace, inspiration, and belonging.
With Mike’s blessing and the collective determination of our community, we embark on this journey with renewed fervor, knowing that the essence of Silent Weekend lives on within each of us. May the Hands Up Conference serve as a beacon of hope, unity, and empowerment for generations to come, as we honor the legacy of two extraordinary souls who dared to dream of a world where silence speaks volumes.
Thank you Mike Tuccelli for your blessing, encouragement, and continuous involvement in the Deaf and American Sign Language Communities.
We hope to make you and Maureen proud.
